Civil War Memorial Tablet Project at Atkinson Common
The Civil War Memorial Tablet Plaza project is primarily focused on the renovations and improvements to the hardscape encompassing the bold, historic, granite structure that honors local residents who served in the Civil War. The Belleville Improvement Society has made great strides over the last year, replacing the previous, deteriorated hardscape with a new paver and granite hardscape. The irrigation and flowerbed configurations have been modified to compliment the new design. Newly renovated tablets were unveiled to a crowd of dignitaries and hundreds of residents on June 15 to mark the centenary of Tablet Day, the original dedication of the memorial in 1913 (pictured above). The group now plans illumination of the tablets and obelisk; re-setting of the cobblestones that encompass the circular driveway; repairs to the Lily Pond curbing; and masonry restoration work to the granite monument.
The project has been awarded $18,400 in 2014 funding from the Mayor Gayden W. Morrill Charitable Foundation.
